2014 Student Awards

 

Governor’s Scholars Program

Kayla Michelle Boaz, Brooke Jackson, Madison Mitchell, Alisha Samuel

  • The Governor’s Scholars Program is a 5 week, residential summer program for outstanding Kentucky students completing their junior year of high school 
  • Students will spend five weeks this summer on the campus of either Bellarmine University in Louisville (Brooke), Morehead State University (Kayla & Alisha) or Murray State University (Madison)
  • They will receive a full-paid tuition scholarship for four years if the students have the ACT score and GPA required by the college they choose to attend

 

 

 

MSU Commonwealth Honors Academy

Tyler Westbrooks

  • CHA is a 3 week academic, personal and social development residential summer program for outstanding students completing their junior year of high school.  It is held on the campus of Murray State University during the month of June.  
  • Tyler will earn 6 tuition-free college credit hours while at CHA and will have the opportunity to take 6 more college credit hours free of charge during his senior year
  • He will also receive a guaranteed four-year, $2000-per-year housing scholarship to MSU

 

 

 

HOBY – Transylvania University, Lexington, KY

Noah Cunningham, Sarah Harpole, Jonathan Reynolds

  • Noah, Sarah and Jonathan were selected by the faculty of HCHS to participate in this program for their strong leadership skills. 
  • They will spend four days in June on the campus of Transylvania University in Lexington, KY participating in unique leadership training, service-learning and motivation-building experiences.

 

 

 

University of Kentucky “Rising Scholar” Award

Maiesha Simmons

  • The intent of the Rising Scholar Award is to help UK identify a high school sophomore we believe is on track for success at the collegiate level.  He/she might be a likely GSP or GSA student, a National Merit or National Achievement Semifinalist, or they may simply demonstrate exemplary abilities both inside and outside the classroom.   
  • Maiesha was selected by the faculty of HCHS  based on her academic record, potential for success, demonstration of leadership and community service, and contribution to diversity
  • Maiesha will be invited to an exclusive event at UK this summer and she will receive additional unique opportunities, mailings and information from UK over the next few years of high school. 

UK Book Award

 Brooke Jackson

  • The purpose of this award is to identify one accomplished junior from our high school
  • Brooke was chosen by the faculty of HCHS based on the strength of his academic record, potential for academic success, demonstration of leadership and community service and contribution to diversity

 

 

 

U of L Yarmuth Book Award

 Jade Florence

  • The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding juniors in the top 20% of their class  and Southern Indiana who show academic promise 
  • Jade was chosen by the faculty of HCHS based on the strength of her academic record, intellectual curiosity, and contributions to her school and community
  • She will receive a book, chosen by the U of L committee, special program invitations to U of L, along with an invite to the annual reception in her honor which will be held on the campus of U of L

 

 

 

MSU AIMS Program (Adventures in Math and Science)

Jalisha Hunter

  • AIMS is an Upward Bound math and science program that offers  free college credit through Murray State University (Bridge Students), financial aid/financial literacy counseling, ACT workshops, and plenty of educational and cultural trips. All of this is offered at no cost to the participants. 
  • Students will spend six weeks in the summer on the campus of MSU where they will be divided into research teams led by a professor and/or graduate student. They will be enrolled in classes during the day and participate in nightly activities.

 

 

 

RECC Youth Capital Tour

Brooke Massey (Hickman-Fulton RECC), Haley-Marie Ellegood (West KY RECC)

  • The process for selection included submitting an application to the electric cooperative through which the student’s family receives electrical services.  Brooke was selected by the Hickman-Fulton RECC and Haley-Marie was selected by the West KY RECC.  
  • These young ladies will join approximately 60 students from across Kentucky as well students from across the U.S. in Washington, D.C. for an action-packed week in June to tour the nation’s capital and also learn how our government works. 

 

Washington Youth Summit on the Environment

Jade Florence

  • This is a week-long residential summer program held on the campus of George Mason University in Washington, D.C.
  • Outstanding sophomores and juniors from all across the U.S. are specially selected by the program to attend the Summit, based on strong academic performance, a demonstrated interest in conservation and the environment, and the ability to serve as exceptional representatives of their states and high schools. 
  • Students take an active role in the curriculum through exclusive behind-the-scenes explorations of facilities and laboratories of the Smithsonian and National Zoo, and through exclusive field visits, special access to, and activities with, researchers, scientists, directors and staff. 
  • Jade has received a $1500 scholarship to help cover the cost.  She will receive 1 college credit hour upon completion of the Summit.
